Anthropic on June 11 announced Claude Corps, a national fellowship program that will embed 1,000 early-career workers inside US nonprofits, paying each fellow $85,000 a year to coach organizations on Claude-based workflows.

What

Per Anthropic's announcement, the company is committing an initial $150 million to the program. Each fellowship runs 12 months, full-time and in-person at the host organization. Fellows receive intensive Claude training up front, then five hours of ongoing training per week throughout the placement. They also receive an expansive Claude token budget and a CodePath mentor.

At least 400 nonprofits will host fellows over the next 12 months. Named hosts at launch include Braven, Code the Dream, Heartland Forward, the Montgomery County Food Bank, RAINN, Goodwill Industries International, the International Rescue Committee, and the YMCA of Greater Charlotte.

Claude Corps is structured as a three-way partnership. Anthropic funds the program and provides Claude expertise. CodePath, described by Anthropic as America's largest provider of collegiate computer science education, serves as the official employer of record and leads fellow programming. Social Finance, a nonprofit and registered investment advisor, leads measurement and evaluation and will build a longer-term financial vehicle to enable the program to scale.

Applications for fellows opened June 11 and close July 17 for the first cohort of 100, which begins in October 2026. Rolling applications are open for cohorts starting in January 2027 and August 2027. The eligibility bar is narrow: applicants must be over 18, authorized to work in the US, comfortable working with Claude, and willing to relocate if required. Relocation support is available. No degree requirement applies, and fewer than two years of full-time work experience is the ceiling.

Why it matters

Anthropic framed the program explicitly around economic disruption. The announcement states that "the benefits of transformative AI systems could come at the cost of significant disruption" and that companies building the technology "have a responsibility to make sure the benefits are fully realized and widely shared, and to invest directly in the workers absorbing the change." That framing puts Claude Corps closer in spirit to a workforce transition program than a typical vendor partnership.

For the nonprofit sector, the practical offer is subsidized technical capacity. Smaller organizations including food banks, veteran-services nonprofits, and marine conservation groups rarely have the budget to hire dedicated AI staff. A fully funded, trained fellow sidesteps that constraint. The arrangement also deepens Claude adoption across a sector that has not historically been a primary target for frontier AI companies.

The program's design locks in Claude specifically. Fellows are trained on Claude workflows, work within host organizations for a year, and leave behind institutional knowledge tied to that toolset. That gives Anthropic a durable presence inside several hundred organizations.

Context

Anthropic released Claude Corps alongside a policy framework on AI's impact on work. The pairing is deliberate: the lab is publicly acknowledging that AI may displace workers while simultaneously funding a program it describes as a model for "widening AI's benefits during a period of vast economic change." Anthropic said it plans to open-source some of the core technology behind the program and to explore replicating the model in countries outside the US.

The Register noted the parallel to AmeriCorps, the US federal service program that places workers inside community organizations for a year at a stipend. Claude Corps pays substantially more ($85,000 salary plus benefits versus AmeriCorps' living stipend), uses a private-sector employer of record, and ties all activity to a specific commercial AI platform.

What to watch next

The first cohort of 100 fellows begins in October 2026. Application volume and acceptance rates will give an early read on whether the $85,000 salary attracts enough candidates from outside traditional tech pathways. Anthropic said it intends to rigorously measure mission advancement at host organizations and fellow career outcomes. Those results, expected once the first cohort completes in late 2027, will determine how far the program scales beyond the initial 1,000.
