What changed

The program runs through a new Claude team plan for scientists. Principal investigators or equivalent staff at qualifying institutions complete a verification form to claim their lab's plan. Once verified, a PI can add research team members to the plan at the same rates. Both the free Standard tier and the $15 per month Premium tier are locked for 12 months, per Anthropic's announcement.

Anthropic stated it intends to extend access "well beyond the initial 10,000 seats" in the coming months, though no timeline or cap for the expansion was given.

Credits and platform access also expand

Two parallel updates accompanied the seat announcement. First, Anthropic widened its AI for Science credit program. Previously focused on biological sciences, the program now accepts applications from researchers in mathematics, physics, and engineering. Any researcher can apply for up to $50,000 in credits per project, per the announcement.

Second, the Claude Science AI workbench, which launched in beta in June 2026, is now open to all Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users rather than a waitlist. The workbench integrates research tools, produces auditable artifacts, and provides access to computing resources.

A notable carve-out for life sciences

Researchers in biology and chemistry face a constraint the announcement made explicit: they remain limited to Opus-class models. Fable models continue to block professional biology and drug development queries due to dual-use risk concerns, per Anthropic. The company noted it is working with the US government on a separate access program for life sciences professionals who need Mythos-class models, with the first participants enrolled as of the announcement.

Why it matters

The free Standard seat removes a direct cost barrier that blocked many academic labs from adopting Claude for everyday research work. Labs doing compute-heavy work, the kind cited in Anthropic's own examples on the Riemann zeta function and protein design, had previously needed to apply for credits or pay standard commercial rates. The credit program expansion to math, physics, and engineering opens a funding path to research communities that were not previously eligible.
