On September 16, Anthropic began rolling a unified Claude interface to Pro and Max subscribers that merges chat, Cowork, and Artifacts into one window, dropping the number of interface modes from three to two and shipping Claude Docs and Claude Slides as new beta tools alongside the change.

What changed

The update retires Claude Cowork as a separate tab. Per TechCrunch, Anthropic said customers often struggled to choose the right tab for the right task; the new interface auto-routes requests without requiring users to switch modes, keeping Claude Chat and Claude Code as the two remaining top-level modes.

Two beta products shipped with the consolidation:

Claude Docs lets users draft a document inside a conversation, leave comments on completed sections, and share the result by link for editing across web, desktop, and mobile, per TechCrunch.

Claude Slides builds and edits presentations through conversation. Finished decks download as PowerPoint or PDF files and can be shared by link for collaborative editing on any device, per TechCrunch.

Claude Design, the site and prototype builder Anthropic introduced in April, is now accessible from any conversation rather than as a standalone mode.

Why it matters

The obvious change for Pro and Max subscribers is friction removal: no more choosing a starting tab before knowing what a task requires. Anthropic positions the router as the deciding layer, which means users can describe a task and let Claude pick the right surface.

The bigger signal is Anthropic pushing into the productivity-suite space occupied by Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. Claude Docs and Claude Slides are both beta, so neither feature set is final. But AI-tool operators evaluating document or presentation workflows now have a native Claude path to consider alongside dedicated tools. The key question is stability: both products need to reach general availability before they earn serious consideration for production use. Until then, they are worth testing for non-critical workflows.

Enterprise accounts are protected by a buffer. Per 9to5Mac, Anthropic stated that Enterprise admins will receive at least 30 days' notice before the unified interface reaches that tier. Team and Free plans will follow at an unspecified later date.

What to watch next

Two milestones will define whether Claude Docs and Claude Slides can compete with mature productivity tools: whether Claude Slides adds live multi-user collaboration before the beta exits, and what export integrations Claude Docs ships with at general availability. The current beta offers link-based sharing; native export to Google Docs or Microsoft Word format would determine how smoothly Claude Docs fits into existing document workflows.
