Google Meet's new Gemini feature drafts your follow-up email automatically

The short version

Google Meet now generates a follow-up email or Google Tasks list straight from a call's own notes, turned on by default for eligible Workspace accounts.

Google Meet's new Gemini feature drafts your follow-up email automatically

A call ends, and instead of someone opening a blank Gmail draft to recap what got decided, Google Meet can now hand over a drafted follow-up email, or a list of action items already pushed into Google Tasks, pulled straight from the meeting's own notes.

What happened

Google began rolling out "next steps" for Google Meet on October 5, 2026, detailed in a Workspace Updates post published October 12. The feature runs on Gemini and Workspace Studio and surfaces in a "Routines for this meeting" section on the post-meeting screen, for both one-off and recurring calls. It only works if "Take notes for me" was switched on during the call itself, per Google's post. At launch there are exactly two routines: drafting a follow-up email in Gmail and exporting action items to Google Tasks. Google said more routines are coming but did not name them or give a date.

Admins have to turn it off, not on

Google said next steps will be on by default for eligible accounts, and administrators who do not want it have to disable it themselves, either at the domain, OU, or group level through Workspace Studio admin settings, or by turning off "Take Notes for Me" outright, per the announcement. That default-on design means a drafted email or a Tasks export tied to whatever a Gemini transcript captured can start appearing in an account before anyone asked for it. The rollout was also already live before the post went up: Google's own timeline puts the start of the "extended rollout" to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains at October 5, a full week ahead of the October 12 announcement, so some admins may have seen the option appear before reading about it anywhere.

Who gets it, and when the rest arrives

Availability is scoped to Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Education Add-ons with Google AI Pro for Education, per Google. The rollout is an "extended" one that Google says can run longer than the usual 15-day visibility window, so accounts in scope will not all see the toggle on the same day.

What to watch next

Whether Google ships the routines it has only described as "on the way," such as logging a decision to a CRM or posting a recap to chat, and on what timeline, is still open; the announcement does not commit to a date. Admins who have not already checked their Workspace Studio settings have a reason to look now, since the feature is live for some domains already and arrives switched on.
