Anthropic Extends Claude Fable 5 Free Access to July 19 with 50% Higher Rate Limits
On July 12, Anthropic pushed the Claude Fable 5 promotional access deadline out by one week to Sunday, July 19 at 11:59 pm PT, and added a 50% boost to Claude Code weekly rate limits for users still inside the promotional window.
What happened
Fable 5 launched June 9, 2026, priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens per Anthropic's release. A promotional period held those charges at bay for API users who signed up at launch. That window was originally set to close before July 12, but Anthropic extended it twice within one week, per Forbes: first to July 12, then to July 19. Each announcement came hours before the prior deadline expired.
Alongside the extended access window, Claude Code weekly rate limits got a 50% increase, per Forbes. Hitting the weekly rate limit was the main friction point for teams running multi-file refactors or sustained agentic sessions during the promotional period, so this change is concrete and immediate.
After July 19
Credit-based billing at $10 per million input and $50 per million output tokens kicks in on July 20. Anthropic has not stated whether a grace period applies to accounts without a billing method on file. Users who want uninterrupted access need a credit balance in place before 11:59 pm PT on July 19.
The pricing applies to API access. Claude.ai subscription plans run on separate billing and are not affected by this transition.
Why it matters
For engineering teams building on Claude Code, the 50% rate limit boost buys meaningful headroom in the final week. Automated runs that previously hit caps mid-session can now complete before the billing switch takes effect.
The pattern of extensions tells a different story. Anthropic has given no public explanation for why the deadline keeps moving. Two last-minute extensions within one week suggest the credit-billing onboarding is running behind schedule, whether from account volume or payment flow friction. A third extension on July 19 would confirm the rollout has structural delays. A firm July 19 cutoff would move the entire Fable 5 API user base to paid billing at once. Teams that have not added a credit balance will lose API access at midnight.
Per Anthropic's June 9 announcement, Claude Mythos 5 runs on the same underlying model with safeguards lifted in specific areas, but access goes through Project Glasswing and a separate trusted access program. Anthropic has not publicly documented rate limits for Mythos 5 accounts.
What to watch
Watch for an Anthropic statement on or around July 19. Any credit grants for existing promotional users, automatic account migration details, or a fourth extension would indicate the billing onboarding has not yet stabilized.
