The short version

Anthropic ended three weeks of promotional cliff dates on July 18 by announcing Fable 5 as a standard Max and Team Premium plan feature from July 20. Pro and Team Standard subscribers retain credit-only Fable 5 access and each receive a one-time $100 goodwill credit.

Anthropic Adds Fable 5 to Max and Team Premium Plans from July 20, Pro Users Get a One-Time $100 Credit

Three weeks of rolling deadline extensions ended on July 18 when Anthropic announced Fable 5 will be a standard feature in Max and Team Premium plans starting July 20 with no published expiry date. Tonight at 11:59 PM PT the promotional window closes for all subscribers. Pro and Team Standard accounts lose plan-included Fable 5 access after that cutover, but each receives a one-time $100 usage credit.

What

On July 18, 2026, Anthropic posted on X and confirmed the change in a direct statement: "Beginning July 20, Claude Fable 5 will be included in all Max and Team Premium plans, at 50% of limits. Pro and Team Standard users will continue to have access to Fable via usage credits, and will receive a one-time $100 credit."

The 50% cap means Fable 5 draws from the same weekly usage pool as all other Claude models. Per Anthropic's help center, Fable 5 consumes that pool faster than Sonnet or Opus per session. Once a subscriber reaches the 50% Fable allocation, the account can either switch to another model to stay within the remaining plan budget, or continue on Fable 5 through usage credits billed separately. The credits path bills at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, per Anthropic's Fable 5 launch page.

A separate but related change appeared on the same day: Anthropic's Claude Code weekly limits page confirmed the 50% boost to Claude Code weekly rate limits has been extended through August 19, 2026, independent of the Fable 5 subscription change. Claude Code version 2.1.170 or later is required to access Fable 5, per Anthropic.

Plan Matrix from July 20

The announcement creates a two-tier Fable 5 access structure.

Max subscribers across all tiers (5x, 10x, and 20x) and Team Premium seat holders get Fable 5 as a standard plan feature capped at 50% of weekly usage limits. Anthropic did not publish an end date for this inclusion in the July 18 announcement.

Pro ($20 per month) and Team Standard subscribers lose plan-included Fable 5 access after tonight. Each account in these tiers receives a one-time $100 credit. Credits bill at standard API rates when the account enables usage credits in Claude settings; Fable 5 access requires that toggle to be on.

Enterprise plans: Premium seats follow the Max and Team Premium structure. Standard seats require usage credits for all Fable 5 access, as they did throughout the promotional period. Consumption-based Enterprise seats and direct API access are not affected by this change; Fable 5 has always billed at standard API rates on those paths.

Why It Matters

For Max and Team Premium subscribers, the July 20 change removes the recurring cost uncertainty that defined the past three weeks. Fable 5 sessions no longer run against a short countdown to another billing transition. Agents and coding workflows using Fable 5 as the primary model can plan around the 50% weekly allocation on a stable footing.

For Pro subscribers, the cutover is a real cost shift. After midnight tonight PT, any Fable 5 session draws usage credits, not plan budget. Enabling credits in Claude account settings before July 20 is the required step for uninterrupted Fable 5 access. The $100 one-time credit provides a starting buffer, but the rate at which it depletes depends on session length and model throughput. Teams that run Fable 5 on long agentic sessions should run the math against the $10/$50 per million token rate before planning July 20 usage.

The Claude Code weekly limit extension to August 19 is favorable and applies to all eligible plan tiers, including Pro. That boost does not depend on Fable 5 plan access.

Context and Background

Anthropic's July 18 statement attributed the extension cycle to capacity constraints: "Demand for Fable has been challenging to predict, which is why we rolled it out to subscription plans in stages, extending access several times as we secured additional capacity."

The timeline, per ExplainX reporting: Fable 5 launched for subscriptions on June 9, 2026. An export-control pause interrupted access on June 12. The model returned July 1 with a promotional 50% weekly cap structure. Three cliff dates followed. The first deadline, July 7, passed without a cutover. An extension moved it to July 12, and a second extension moved it to July 19. The July 18 announcement replaced that pattern with a published plan matrix for the first time.

Anthropic's statement cited capacity as the driver. Community commentary on X pointed to GPT-5.6 Sol and Kimi K3 as context for the timing, though no named source was cited in Anthropic's announcement. A false credits gate on July 17 that briefly blocked Fable 5 access two days early read, in retrospect, as a staging error ahead of the July 20 policy update rather than the permanent cutover.

What to Watch Next

Anthropic's help center page for Fable 5 promotional access had not been updated to reflect the July 20 plan structure as of the July 19 publication of this article. Verifying Fable 5 access and billing status in-app on July 20 is advisable before running extended sessions, given the July 17 glitch.

Two structural questions remain unanswered in the July 18 announcement: whether Anthropic will raise the Fable 5 subscription cap above 50% for Max or Team Premium, and whether Pro users gain any path to plan-included access in a future pricing adjustment.
