Eight Disney technology employees told Business Insider they barely used GitHub Copilot. On July 29, Disney made it official: an internal message confirmed GitHub Copilot, Amazon Kiro, and Amazon Q will be removed from its approved US tooling in August, per the Reuters wire summary of Business Insider's exclusive.

What changed

Three tools are out for US staff: GitHub Copilot, Amazon's Kiro agentic code editor, and Amazon Q. OpenAI Codex is coming in as the replacement.

Two tools survive the cut: Anthropic Claude Enterprise and Cursor. The Claude situation has a specific wrinkle. Bedrock access is being removed; the direct Claude Enterprise contract with Anthropic stays. International teams are unaffected by any of these changes. The consolidation applies to US operations only.

Employee feedback cited in Business Insider's reporting explains the Copilot removal. One product manager described Copilot output as "needlessly complex" and said it required cleanup before it was usable, per ShopiFreaks's summary of the Business Insider exclusive. A longtime engineer said his Copilot access lapsed from disuse. Across eight Disney tech employees cited in the article, the pattern was consistent: the tool was approved but not adopted.

Why it matters

Disney's move reflects a budget rationalization dynamic that is accelerating in enterprise AI. The first round of approvals in 2023 and 2024 produced overlapping lists. The current round is the cut: which tools did staff actually use, and which ones sat idle?

The Claude distinction here is the most instructive part. Disney is keeping Claude Enterprise through a direct Anthropic contract while removing the same underlying model accessed through AWS Bedrock. That separation signals a preference for a direct vendor relationship over a platform-mediated channel, whether for data handling control, model version specificity, or contract terms Disney has not publicly stated.

Cursor's survival alongside Claude Enterprise is consistent with that adoption-first logic. Tools staff reached for daily stayed. Tools generating output described as "needlessly complex" did not. For enterprise teams currently running their own consolidation pass, the Disney inventory cuts a clean line between tools with real daily adoption and those that only appeared on an approved list.

What to watch next

Whether other large enterprises follow with similar Copilot removals in favor of direct Claude Enterprise contracts is the signal to watch over the next two quarters. GitHub and Microsoft had not responded publicly to the Disney decision as of publication. Amazon Kiro launched in mid-2025; it has not yet built the enterprise adoption base that might have insulated it from the cut.
