OpenAI Admin plugin brings workspace management into ChatGPT Work and Codex chat
Enterprise administrators running ChatGPT Work or Codex workspaces can now manage team access, credit usage, and budget approvals inside a single ChatGPT conversation. OpenAI made the Admin plugin available from the Plugins directory in ChatGPT Work on August 25, 2026.
What the plugin does
Four administrative functions are available at launch, per 9to5Mac's coverage of the OpenAI announcement.
Usage analysis lets admins prompt ChatGPT to pull activity and credit consumption across teams, then export the results as charts and presentation decks. OpenAI's own demo showed a staff member asking ChatGPT to analyze adoption and credit usage changes across teams over the past 30 days and generating a monthly rollout review from the output, ready to share to Slack.
User management covers adding and removing workspace members, updating group assignments, and handling onboarding and offboarding. Access control lets admins review permissions and restrict specific features or models by role or group. Spending management surfaces pending budget requests and allows admins to approve or deny them in context, alongside a view of existing usage limits for members and workspaces.
The plugin covers both ChatGPT Work and Codex from a single chat session. Admins install it from the Plugins directory inside ChatGPT Work.
Why it matters
Before this plugin, enterprise teams scaling across ChatGPT Work and Codex had to navigate separate admin surfaces for roster changes, spending reviews, and access controls. The Admin plugin collapses that into a prompt in the same interface where the work happens.
The release is part of a deliberate governance build-out around ChatGPT Work. That product launched in July 2026 as OpenAI's main agentic platform for business teams. Per OpenAI, the Admin plugin is the governance layer for that product, and more enterprise admin capabilities are planned. The plugin's arrival also gives enterprise evaluators a concrete feature to compare: Claude Enterprise and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform each surface governance through dedicated management consoles, while OpenAI is routing those controls through a conversational interface.
For teams already on ChatGPT Work or Codex, the plugin is available today through the Plugins directory, no separate provisioning required.
What to watch next
Security controls including IP allowlists and SSO event log access are absent from the initial release. Per OpenAI's broader enterprise roadmap signals, subsequent plugin updates are expected. Those additions will determine how complete the governance surface is for regulated industries where security audit trails are non-negotiable before enterprise-wide rollout.
