ChatGPT and Codex Add Multi-Account Support for Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts Plugins
Until August 28, every ChatGPT user was capped at one Gmail inbox per plugin. OpenAI lifted that limit, and users running separate personal and work Google accounts can now pull from both inside a single conversation.
What changed
OpenAI rolled out multi-account support for the Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts plugins in ChatGPT and Codex on August 28, 2026, per OpenAI DX engineer Gabriel Chua's post on X. Until now, each plugin accepted only one connected Google account. A user with a personal Gmail and a separate work account had to log out or open a new session to switch context between the two.
The connection flow is straightforward. Users open the Plugins section in the left sidebar, find the relevant Google service, and click the gear icon on an already-authorized plugin. Google's standard OAuth flow handles the authorization for the additional account. ChatGPT and Codex can then read across all connected inboxes, calendars, and contact lists when responding to a query.
The rollout covers Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans on web, desktop, iOS, and Android, per 9to5Mac's coverage. Connected accounts remain subject to Google's app permissions and the workspace controls an administrator has set. Availability on Business and Enterprise plans may vary based on how an organization's admin has configured Google integrations.
Why it matters
The single-account restriction was the main reason teams and freelancers kept separate ChatGPT sessions for personal and professional tasks. The workaround created friction and broke any workflow that depended on context from both accounts in the same response.
With the limit removed, ChatGPT can now answer a scheduling question by checking a personal calendar and a work calendar together, or search across two inboxes when looking for a specific thread. Codex gains the same range, which matters for developers whose client work and personal side projects run through different Google accounts.
The change also broadens the reach of ChatGPT's agentic scheduling features, which read Google Calendar to check availability before proposing meeting times. A fuller account picture means fewer conflicts that appear in only one calendar. Operators who ruled out Google integration workflows because of the one-account cap now have a reason to revisit that decision.
What to watch next
OpenAI has not published an official cap on how many accounts per service a user can connect. Chua's post described adding a "second (or third!) account," which implies at least three connections per plugin are supported. Watch for enterprise IT teams to report on how admin workspace controls interact with multi-account authorizations at scale, particularly whether Business and Enterprise dashboards will gain a policy interface for approving or restricting which Google accounts individual users can link.
