September API budgets for Claude Sonnet 5 just got a 33% break. Anthropic's developer documentation has removed the August 31 expiration date that accompanied the model's June 30 launch, and now lists $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens as the standard, time-unlimited rate.

What happened

Claude Sonnet 5 launched June 30, 2026 at an introductory price of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens per the Anthropic announcement. The launch post stated explicitly that those rates applied "through August 31, 2026, after which it will be priced at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens."

That September 1 increase did not go into effect. Anthropic's Sonnet 5 model reference page now lists the pricing as $2 input and $10 output per million tokens with no expiration qualifier. The model comparison table on the same page positions Sonnet 5 at $2/$10 alongside Claude Opus 5 at $5/$25, Claude Fable 5 at $10/$50, and Claude Haiku 4.5 at $1/$5. All four appear as their respective standard rates with no time-limited language.

The original launch announcement remains live and unchanged, still carrying the August 31 deadline and the $3/$15 "standard" price mentioned at launch. The model's technical reference documentation, which is the source developers build against for current pricing, reflects $2/$10 as the going-forward rate.

Why it matters

The simplest implication: Sonnet 5 now costs less per call than the model it replaced. Claude Sonnet 4.6, which Sonnet 5 supersedes as the recommended production Sonnet, is listed at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. Any team that was considering a rollback to Sonnet 4.6 to dodge the September increase can skip that move and stay on the newer model.

At batch API rates (50% off, per Anthropic's pricing docs), Sonnet 5 drops to $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. That puts high-volume, non-latency-sensitive Sonnet 5 workloads at the same per-token cost as real-time Haiku 4.5 calls.

For teams finalizing Q3 or Q4 contracts with enterprises or downstream customers, the $2/$10 rate is the number to put in writing. No integration changes are needed: the API model ID stays claude-sonnet-5, and all other parameters remain the same.

What to watch next

Anthropic has not published a standalone news post about dropping the September rate increase. The change is visible in the model's developer documentation rather than a press release. Watch the anthropic.com/claude/sonnet product page, which still carries the original "through August 31" language, for an update that removes that text and confirms the permanent rate.

Also worth tracking: Claude Opus 5, now listed at $5/$25, sits significantly above Sonnet 5's rate. Whether Anthropic reprices Opus 5 in response to competitive pressure from OpenAI and Google will determine whether the mid-tier Sonnet pricing holds or shifts again before year-end.
