ChatGPT now runs on the iPhone Lock Screen. OpenAI pushed a batch of feature updates on September 1, 2026, and the most consequential change is one that does not require opening the app: Live Voice now persists as a Live Activity card on the Lock Screen and as a Dynamic Island pill on supported iPhones, per the ChatGPT release notes.

What changed

Before this update, a ChatGPT voice session required the app to stay in the foreground or the phone to remain unlocked. September 1 changed that. A voice conversation now appears as a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island on iPhone 14 Pro and later models. With the screen off, the microphone stays active and ChatGPT replies surface as Lock Screen notifications. Users end the session by returning to the app.

Sticker pack generation arrived in the same update. A user can describe a concept in text or upload a photo, and ChatGPT produces a set of stickers ready to send in iMessage or WhatsApp on supported devices. All ChatGPT mobile users globally can access the feature, according to the release notes.

Browser extension support expanded from Chrome to four additional browsers: Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi. Feature behavior varies by browser: Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi gain a side chat panel; Opera gains tab mention and browser control but not the side panel, the company said.

ChatGPT also added tap-to-hear audio pronunciation and phonetic breakdowns for language learners, per OpenAI.

Why it matters

Lock Screen and Dynamic Island are persistent ambient surfaces on the iPhone that Apple historically reserved for native system features and apps with Live Activities entitlements. ChatGPT now occupies that space for voice. An iPhone 14 Pro user can glance at the Dynamic Island pill to confirm ChatGPT is listening, without unlocking the device, a reachability change that the standard app-icon model did not offer.

For teams that use ChatGPT voice for hands-free note capture, research, or workflow queries, the Lock Screen mode removes the friction of keeping the phone unlocked. Battery consumption in sustained sessions is the practical variable to test. OpenAI said it optimized background processes to minimize battery impact, according to the release notes, but usage patterns vary.

Developers, researchers, and privacy-focused users who run Vivaldi or Brave as a primary browser gain something concrete from the extension expansion. Until now, the official ChatGPT extension required Chrome.

OpenAI offered Background Conversations in earlier ChatGPT versions, which let voice sessions continue in other apps. How Apple's September 9 event addresses third-party Live Activities access under iOS 27 will determine whether the ChatGPT Lock Screen experience gains new capabilities or faces new constraints. Anthropic has not announced a comparable Lock Screen integration for the Claude iOS app.
