GitHub Copilot's October 2 model cutover swaps Claude Opus 4.7's replacement to Opus 5.5
GitHub finished a deprecation it announced a month ago, and the model it is steering admins toward has changed since that first notice. On September 3, GitHub told Copilot admins that Claude Opus 4.7 would retire October 2 in favor of Claude Opus 5. The October 2 changelog that actually carried out the cutover names a different target: Claude Opus 5.5.
What happened
As of October 2, 2026, GitHub deprecated four models across every Copilot surface, including Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions, per the GitHub changelog. Both Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini 3.6 Flash give way to Gemini 3.8 Flash, and Kimi K2.7 Code hands off to Kimi K3. The fourth retirement carries the real change: Claude Opus 4.7's replacement is now Claude Opus 5.5, not the Claude Opus 5 that GitHub's September 3 notice had named a month earlier. GitHub said no admin action is required to remove the old models; they stay selectable in the Chat model picker without manual cleanup, just unsupported. Enterprise and Business admins who want the replacements available still have to turn them on through their organization's Copilot model policy before the new model shows up in the selector.
Policies tuned for Opus 5 in September need a second look
Any admin who read the September notice literally and enabled Opus 5 specifically in their model policy has not actually provisioned the model GitHub now recommends. Anthropic shipped Opus 5.5, and GitHub added it to Copilot across every IDE surface on September 22, weeks after the original deprecation notice went out. The swap matters most for teams that locked workflows or Copilot Extensions to a named model string. Those integrations do not fail silently; they stop resolving once the underlying model is gone, so the fix is to re-check the model policy against today's changelog rather than the one from a month ago.
What to watch next
Kimi K3 taking over as Copilot's suggested replacement for code-focused tasks lands in an awkward week for its maker. OpenAI disclosed on October 2 that it disrupted a reasoning-extraction campaign it ties to individuals associated with Moonshot AI, according to the report. GitHub has not said whether that dispute affects Kimi K3's standing inside Copilot, and nothing in the October 2 changelog suggests it will. Worth checking is whether GitHub's model-policy UI already lists Opus 5.5 and Kimi K3 as available, or whether rollout lags the changelog entry for some tiers.
