The short version

OpenAI's October 5 announcement adds sponsored product images to ChatGPT during image generation, citing early partner data on cost per acquisition, ahead of a US-only advertiser test starting later this month.

OpenAI launches a visual ad format inside ChatGPT's image generator

ChatGPT's first visual ad format already comes with an early performance number attached: OpenAI says WeightWatchers' cost per acquisition through the new placement ran 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark, according to attribution partner DV Rockerbox per OpenAI's announcement. OpenAI said Monday it will test sponsored product images during ChatGPT's image-generation sessions starting later this month, the first time its ads will be tied to the images users are creating rather than only to chat answers.

What happened

OpenAI's October 5 post, titled "Building advertising for the way people use AI," describes a new visual ad format that will appear while someone is generating an image in ChatGPT per OpenAI. The ads will be clearly labeled, kept separate from the image being created, and will not influence ChatGPT's answers, OpenAI said. Testing begins later this month in the US with an initial group of advertisers; there is no global timeline yet. Alongside the format, OpenAI expanded its measurement partnerships, adding Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp integrations so advertisers can pipe conversion data into ChatGPT Ads from systems they already use, plus new brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. OpenAI also cited three early partner results: DV Rockerbox's WeightWatchers number above, a 67% net-new-customer share of incremental purchases for wellness brand Dose per measurement partner WorkMagic, and a 93% new-visitor rate from ChatGPT Ads for Portland Leather per Triple Whale. ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people a week, per OpenAI.

Marketers get a number to test against, free users get another ad surface

The three cited results give marketers something concrete to weigh before committing budget to a brand-new channel: a cost-per-acquisition comparison, an incrementality read, and a new-customer mix, each tied to a named measurement vendor rather than an OpenAI press claim alone. That is a real signal, but it is also a small, self-selected sample from OpenAI's own current advertiser pool, reported by OpenAI's own blog post, not an independent study. For everyday ChatGPT users on the free tier, the practical change is simpler: image generation, a feature people already use for personal and creative tasks, now carries ad inventory next to it. OpenAI introduced its first ChatGPT ads earlier this year to support the free and low-cost tiers and expanded them to India in August 2026, per TechCrunch, so this format extends an already-growing ad business rather than starting one from scratch.

Context and reactions

TechCrunch frames the launch against a competitive backdrop: Meta's free Muse agentic app is drawing users away from paid chatbot subscriptions, which raises the pressure on OpenAI to fund ChatGPT's scale through advertising rather than subscriptions alone per TechCrunch. The Verge's Emma Roth notes OpenAI's own wording that the ads will "initially" appear during image generation, language that leaves room for the format to expand to other parts of the product per The Verge. Integral Ad Science CEO Lidiane Jones said in OpenAI's post that the brand-suitability pilot will assess how OpenAI's safeguards perform "across a broad and evolving range of scenarios" while keeping user conversations private.

What to watch next

Watch whether the "initially" qualifier turns into an expansion beyond image generation into ChatGPT's text answers themselves, and whether OpenAI starts breaking out ad revenue separately from subscriptions. OpenAI confidentially filed IPO paperwork with the SEC earlier this year per TechCrunch, so a growing ad line is a detail investors will want quantified before any public listing.
