Sakana AI opens an enterprise API platform with usage controls for its Fugu orchestrator models

· by Pondero Newsdesk

The short version

Sakana AI opened early access on October 28, 2026 to an API platform that wraps its Fugu orchestration models in organization billing, audit logs, and role-based access, features the lab says enterprise buyers need before they commit.

Sakana AI opens an enterprise API platform with usage controls for its Fugu orchestrator models

Sakana AI opened early access on October 28 to an enterprise API platform, per the company's announcement, but the admin console is not the real story. On June 12, the US government ordered Anthropic to cut off all foreign-national access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, per Anthropic's own statement, and Sakana has marketed its Fugu orchestration models ever since as the way to avoid exactly that kind of single-vendor exposure. The new platform is the procurement layer that pitch was missing.

Fugu's anti-lock-in pitch now comes with the paperwork enterprises ask for

Fugu is not a single model. It is an orchestration system that routes a task across a pool of frontier models and assembles the combination suited to the workload, a design Sakana has pitched since its June 22 Fugu Ultra release as protection against depending on any one vendor's API. Sakana's launch materials cite the Anthropic suspension directly as the kind of exposure Fugu exists to route around. Until this week, that argument had no procurement layer behind it. Audit trails, invoice billing, budget caps, and signed data-processing agreements are what a compliance or finance team asks for before approving a multi-year contract, not features a research lab's bare API typically ships with.

What

The platform wraps Sakana's existing APIs in the controls enterprise buyers expect, per the company's announcement. A company can create workspaces under one organization, assign member roles, and track API keys and usage from a single admin console. The endpoint is OpenAI-compatible, so an application already calling another vendor's model can switch to Sakana's by changing the base URL rather than rewriting integration code. Fugu and Fugu Ultra ship with the platform now; a larger Fugu Max tier and the Japanese-language Namazu model are coming later. The admin layer adds CSV-exportable audit logs, spending caps, invoice-based billing, a stated policy that customer inputs are not used for training, and standard master service and data-processing agreements. Pricing is not published: applicants hear back individually as capacity opens, with terms shared at that point.

What to watch next

Apply now if the pitch fits: non-US enterprises, or any buyer already running workloads on bare Fugu or Namazu who wants to avoid depending on a single model vendor, get an audit trail, invoice billing, and a signed DPA that the unmanaged APIs never offered. No date has been set for Fugu Max or Namazu to join the platform, and Sakana has not published what pricing looks like once early access ends. Whether the enterprises Sakana approves skew toward organizations wary of the kind of export order Anthropic faced in June will show whether the anti-lock-in pitch is landing with the buyers it targets.
