OpenAI lets ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers claim free API credits worth up to $500 a month

A ChatGPT subscription now doubles as an API budget. OpenAI's changelog confirmed on October 28, 2026 that eligible Pro and Business subscribers can link an API organization they own and draw down monthly API credits worth as much as $500, per OpenAI's changelog.

What

The credit amount tracks the subscriber's plan tier, per OpenAI's support guide: Pro subscribers on the $100 tier receive $100 in monthly API credits, the $200 tier receives $200, and the new $500 tier receives $500. Business workspaces earn credits per paid seat instead, at $20 for each Standard seat and $100 for each Premium seat, pooled and capped at $500 per workspace per month. To qualify, the ChatGPT subscription and the API organization need the same owner and account email, the subscription must be active and paid for at least seven days, and unused credits expire at the end of the billing cycle with no rollover. No API payment method is required to spend them.

A $500 ChatGPT bill now buys a $500 API budget

The credit scales one-to-one with what a subscriber already pays for ChatGPT, so newer and pricier tiers get the biggest benefit. OpenAI introduced the $500-per-month Pro plan at DevDay in September, around the same time it trimmed usage limits on the existing $200 Pro tier, with the lower limits taking effect October 29 for new signups per ProPakistani's DevDay coverage. Stacking a matching API credit on top means a developer who already pays $500 a month for ChatGPT access can prototype against OpenAI's API without opening a separately billed account or adding a card. For smaller teams on Business Premium seats, the per-seat math also rewards upgrading seats rather than adding headcount, since five Premium seats alone hit the $500 workspace cap.

Context

The credit benefit lands alongside another October change: OpenAI collapsed its organization usage tiers from five down to three, named Build, Launch, and Grow, with upgrades now keyed to total credit purchases rather than a separate spending threshold, per the same changelog entry. Read together, the two changes tie API access more tightly to what a customer already spends on ChatGPT seats, rather than treating subscription and API budgets as unrelated lines.

What to watch next

Whether OpenAI extends a comparable credit to ChatGPT Plus or Team subscribers, and whether the $500 workspace cap moves as Business seat counts grow, are both open questions the company has not addressed publicly.
