Anthropic lets Claude read bank accounts through Plaid, but not touch the money

The short version

Anthropic's new Personal Finance beta connects Claude to US bank and card accounts via Plaid for read-only spending analysis, arriving six months after ChatGPT shipped a similar feature in May.

Anthropic lets Claude read bank accounts through Plaid, but not touch the money

Claude can now see inside a user's bank account, but Anthropic built a specific trapdoor around the feature: shared chat links and saved artifacts can keep showing a user's financial figures even after that bank gets unlinked, per Unite.AI's review of the rollout. Anthropic announced Personal Finance in Claude on November 5, a beta that lets eligible US subscribers connect bank and card accounts through Plaid and ask Claude plain-language questions about their money.

What Claude can and cannot see

Personal Finance is read-only. Claude cannot move, manage, or invest a user's money, and Anthropic says the feature is not built to give investment advice, per TechCrunch. Account linking runs through Plaid, so Claude never sees a bank password. For linked accounts, Claude can read the bank and account names, account types, usually the last four digits of the account number, balances, credit limits, and up to 24 months of transaction history including amount, date, merchant, and category, per Unite.AI's breakdown of the Help Center documentation. Investment, loan, and card accounts expose only balances and credit limits, not holdings, trades, rates, or terms. A full account number could still leak if a bank writes it into an account name or a transaction description, per the same report. The rollout is capped at 16 linked US banks per user and excludes Free, Team, and Enterprise plans; only Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers in the US get access this week, across web, desktop, and the iOS and Android apps.

In Anthropic's own worked example, reported by Unite.AI, a user asks where their money went that month. Claude totals $4,309.37 across connected accounts, assigns more than half to rent and utilities, puts $1,024.51 toward food and drink, and checks prior months for comparison before flagging a membership renewal and four bills due before payday. Beyond that kind of monthly rollup, Claude can scan for duplicate charges, creeping subscription costs, and unexpected fees, and it will walk through what a term like APR means along with how much interest a user paid over the year.

Anthropic says conversations inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models, and the product carries no ads or sponsored product recommendations, aligning with the ad-free policy the company published in February. But the privacy mechanics have a real gap: financial data stays in chat history until a user deletes it, and unlinking a bank stops Claude from reading new data without erasing the figures already sitting in old chats, saved artifacts, or shared links, per Unite.AI. Anyone who shares a Claude link or a published dashboard risks exposing account balances and spending charts to whoever views it, and that exposure persists even if the original chat is deleted later. Anthropic also flags its own accuracy limits: balances can be a day or two stale, and an account linked through two different logins can get counted twice in a budget total. For anyone running Claude as a daily work tool and considering linking a personal account, the practical move is to treat every Personal Finance chat as something to actively delete rather than something that quietly expires on its own.

Claude is following ChatGPT's lead by six months

OpenAI shipped a comparable bank-connection feature in ChatGPT in May, letting users link accounts and ask about spending patterns and long-term planning, per TechCrunch's report on that May launch. TechCrunch frames Thursday's launch as Claude catching up to that move rather than opening new ground. The pattern fits a broader push: Anthropic also launched Claude for Legal and Claude for Financial Services for enterprise customers earlier this year, and Personal Finance extends the same vertical-expansion strategy to individual subscribers. Anthropic describes the beta as a first step and says it is talking to banks, wealth managers, and financial-services firms about a next phase where Claude works alongside licensed professionals on bigger financial decisions, per Unite.AI.

What to watch next

Watch whether Anthropic widens Personal Finance to Free or Team plans, whether it extends past the US, and whether the promised hand-off to licensed financial advisors ships, which would move Claude from read-only analysis into something closer to the advisory role OpenAI is also chasing.
