AMD launched EPYC Venice on July 22 at the Advancing AI 2026 conference in San Francisco, making it the first x86 server processor to enter production on TSMC's 2-nanometer process node. The hardware launch arrived alongside a $5 billion equity commitment in Anthropic and a pledge from Anthropic to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI455X GPUs in Helios rack-scale systems, with the first gigawatt beginning in the first half of 2027.

What AMD disclosed

EPYC Venice reaches up to 256 Zen 6c cores across eight compute chiplets on TSMC N2, supported by two 4nm I/O dies. The chip supports 16 DDR5 memory channels and PCIe Gen 6, per TechTimes coverage of the event. The new SP7 socket is not backward-compatible with the SP5 infrastructure used by the current EPYC Turin generation, so enterprise upgrades require a full platform replacement.

The Helios rack holds 18 compute trays, each carrying four MI455X GPUs and one Venice CPU, for 72 MI455X accelerators per unit. Aggregate HBM4 memory across the rack totals 31 terabytes, and AMD rates the system at 2.9 exaFLOPS of FP4 inference compute, per the same TechTimes report.

AMD's press release confirmed Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of MI455X capacity in Helios racks, with deployment of the first gigawatt beginning in H1 2027. AMD committed up to $5 billion as a strategic equity investment in Anthropic, per the same release. The companies also launched a multi-year engineering collaboration: Anthropic will use Claude to optimize workloads for AMD's ROCm stack, and AMD will adopt Claude across engineering and product development. The arrangement builds on Anthropic's existing deployments of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs.

Tom Brown, Anthropic's co-founder and chief compute officer, said in the announcement: "Access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting demand from our customers. By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude."

Why it matters

The Anthropic deal is the largest publicly disclosed GPU commitment AMD has announced for the Helios platform. A 2-gigawatt deployment, if realized on AMD's stated H1 2027 timeline, would place Anthropic among the largest AMD compute customers in the company's history. The announcement confirms that a frontier AI lab is willing to build at datacenter scale on AMD hardware rather than treating Nvidia as a default.

AMD's equity stake sharpens that incentive further. Anthropic's revenue growth is now partly tied to AMD's balance sheet, giving AMD engineers a direct financial reason to close the ROCm software gap that has made operators cautious about committing to AMD silicon at scale. On memory, Helios also carries an edge over Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72: 31 TB of HBM4 versus approximately 20.7 TB, per TechTimes analysis. That margin may favor large-context inference and mixture-of-experts architectures where on-rack model weight capacity limits throughput.

Intel's x86 answer to Venice, Diamond Rapids, is not expected before mid-2027 on Intel 18A-P, per TechTimes. Enterprise teams evaluating 2nm server CPUs have no Intel alternative for at least 12 months.

What to watch next

Lisa Su's keynote on July 23 at 9:30 AM PT is expected to include the first public preview of AMD's MI500-series GPU roadmap for 2027. Helios shipments to Microsoft Azure and other early customers are set to begin in the second half of 2026.
