Three months after launching, a computer-use AI lab co-founded by Reid Hoffman and Mark Pincus is in talks to raise $100 million at a $1 billion valuation, per TechCrunch reporting on July 24. The figure that makes the round notable is not the names attached to it: Prentis arrived at negotiations carrying signed contracts worth up to $50 million with customers in healthcare, manufacturing, and retail.

What

Prentis launched in April 2026, co-founded by CEO Ritankar Das, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, and Zynga founder Mark Pincus. The lab trains models to observe how office workers navigate software, documents, and internal systems, then deploys AI agents that control computers to automate those same tasks.

The $100 million raise at a $1 billion valuation was reported from two people familiar with the discussions. Investor materials obtained by TechCrunch project an estimated $75 million annualized run rate by the end of Q3 2026. The pitch deck notes those figures are "performance-dependent and subject to final execution" and reflect contracted fees rather than recognized revenue, not a guarantee of closed business.

Prentis has more than 25 employees, drawn from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, Tencent, and Alibaba, per its website. The company did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment.

Why it matters

The $50 million in signed contracts before a round close is the more significant number. It shows enterprise customers in healthcare and manufacturing are committing budget to Prentis's workflow automation before the funding is finalized, a harder signal than a projected run rate alone.

Per its pitch deck, Prentis's Hive-32B model claims to outperform OpenAI GPT-5.4 and Anthropic Claude Opus 4.6 on two computer-use benchmarks: WindowsAgentArena, which measures end-to-end task completion in real Windows applications, and ScreenSpot-v2, which tests a model's ability to locate the correct on-screen control. Prentis also claims roughly 10 times lower cost per task than frontier APIs. TechCrunch did not independently verify either benchmark result.

For enterprise operators evaluating computer-use vendors, the unverified cost-per-task ratio is the figure worth pressing during any pilot. If it holds at production scale, it changes the build-versus-buy calculation for automating back-office workflows against Claude Computer Use or OpenAI Operator.

Context

The computer-use automation market Prentis entered is already contested. Anthropic acquired Seattle-based startup Vercept in February 2026, folding in its founders and shutting down the product. OpenAI and Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab are also building computer-use agents, per TechCrunch's sources.

Hoffman stepped down from Microsoft's board in June 2026 to return to hands-on startup work. He is also co-founding Manas AI, an AI drug-discovery startup. TechCrunch describes his Prentis role as a side project alongside Manas. CEO Das, 31, also runs Titan, a holding company whose portfolio includes Tala Health (which raised a $100 million seed round in 2025) and Forta Health (which raised $55 million in 2024).

What to watch next

The round has not closed. A formal announcement will confirm the final valuation and whether institutional backers joined beyond the founding team. Third-party replication of the WindowsAgentArena and ScreenSpot-v2 results would be the clearest signal of where Hive-32B actually ranks before the next enterprise procurement cycle begins.
