Enterprise and Edu customers get a parallel incentive: GPT-5.6 Sol inside Word at no extra cost through September 30, with usage during that window excluded from normal token limits, per the OpenAI Help Center.

What

The add-in installs from Microsoft Marketplace and activates from the Word ribbon. It opens as a persistent sidebar so users can prompt ChatGPT without leaving their document. Within Word, it handles drafting from notes, rewriting selected passages, reorganizing sections, and flagging inconsistent language or formatting, per RuntimeWire. Conversations with the add-in stay separate from a user's main ChatGPT history, and memory does not carry over between sessions. OpenAI notes that complex tables, charts, and formatting may still require manual correction after AI output.

The September 17 launch applies the same add-in codebase already running in Excel and PowerPoint to the Word context. Installing it once enables it across all three applications.

For Enterprise and Edu subscribers, OpenAI offered complimentary access to GPT-5.6 Sol within Word from September 17 through September 30, with that usage excluded from normal limits. Starting October 1, the Word integration becomes enabled by default for those tiers. Workspace administrators can switch it off through the OpenAI admin console, and Microsoft 365 administrators can block installation entirely if their organization requires it.

Why it matters

Until September 17, ChatGPT's Office integration was limited to paid plans or required a browser context outside the document editor. Free plan access in Word removes that friction: any user with a ChatGPT account can now reach an AI drafting and editing assistant inside the application where knowledge workers spend the most time writing.

For teams on Enterprise or Edu plans, the window between September 17 and 30 is the practical evaluation window for GPT-5.6 Sol in Word before it transitions to the standard tier configuration on October 1. Administrators who want to test the integration at no extra cost have less than two weeks. After October 1, Word access flips to on by default, so teams that have not yet reviewed their policy need to act soon.

The timing also closes a competitive gap. Google Workspace's Gemini integration in Docs has been available across plan tiers for several months. Word reaching Free-tier parity removes one of the arguments for Docs as the stronger AI-native document editor.

What to watch next

Whether OpenAI extends the GPT-5.6 Sol preview past September 30 will depend on uptake during the trial window. Google's response in Docs is the competitive indicator to watch: whether Google matches a model upgrade or expands Gemini's document editing features to counter Word's broader plan availability. On the enterprise side, the rate at which Microsoft 365 administrators exercise the installation block will shape whether Office adoption follows a push or pull pattern.
