Amazon Opens Seller Central to Outside AI Agents, Starts With Anthropic's Claude
For the first time, an outside AI agent has direct write access to Amazon's Seller Central platform. Amazon launched the Selling Partner plugin in US beta at Amazon Accelerate on September 23, 2026, with Anthropic's Claude as the only third-party agent in the program at launch. The announcement came two days after Amazon blocked Meta's Muse agent for failing to self-identify while browsing Amazon.com and for operating without notifying the company, which Amazon called a Terms of Service violation, per Pondero's September 22 coverage.
What
The Selling Partner plugin connects an AI agent to Seller Central via API, letting it adjust prices, check inventory levels, update product listings, pull analytics, and handle customer messages without the seller opening Seller Central, per GeekWire. Setup takes roughly 60 seconds with no code required, per GeekWire. Sellers retain approval authority before each action executes, and Amazon cannot access other business data held within the seller's connected assistant.
The plugin is in US beta at launch, with international expansion announced as planned.
Amazon also upgraded its own Seller Assistant at the event, per SiliconAngle. The new version adds a canvas feature for visual strategic planning, including pricing comparisons and ad campaign diagnostics, and gains persistent memory that tracks pricing patterns, inventory cycles, and growth goals across sessions. Background automations allow the Seller Assistant to monitor account activity and act with seller approval. Both the third-party plugin and the Seller Assistant run on Amazon Bedrock, combining Amazon Nova and Claude models. Amazon announced agentic supply chain capabilities for inbound shipment planning and aged inventory management at the same event.
Every primary selling account holder worldwide is receiving a free 12-month Amazon Quick Plus subscription, including two co-worker seats, for accounts enrolled through December 31, 2026, per GeekWire.
Sellers get sanctioned agent access to Seller Central
Amazon treated the two agents very differently. It blocked Meta's Muse agent from its shopping site for failing to self-identify and for operating without prior notification, per Pondero's coverage. Within two days, Amazon announced formal third-party agent access to Seller Central with Claude as the launch partner. The implication is that Amazon intends to control which agents interact with its platform and under what terms, not block agents from its ecosystem altogether.
For sellers, the capability shift is concrete. Amazon said 90 percent of sellers already use outside AI to run parts of their business, per SiliconAngle. The plugin converts that informal usage into a formal, permission-managed channel with write access to pricing, inventory, and listings. That is a meaningfully different risk and capability profile compared to pasting Seller Central screenshots into a chat window.
The choice of Claude as the first outside agent also signals something about Anthropic's commercial positioning. Amazon has a substantial investment relationship with Anthropic, and this is the first time Claude appears as the named first-mover in a major commercial platform's agent access program outside of developer tooling. Seller fees on Amazon generated $46.8 billion in Q2 2026, per SiliconAngle, more than AWS in the same period.
What to watch next
Amazon said additional third-party agents will follow Claude into the Selling Partner plugin program. Whether OpenAI, Microsoft Copilot, or Google's agents receive similar access in the near term will clarify whether this is a structural preference for Anthropic or the opening of a broader ecosystem. Shopify and Etsy are the comparable platforms to watch for similar announcements.
