Anthropic ships a Claude sidebar for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Anthropic opened a public beta of Claude for Google Workspace on October 6, 2026, giving any paid Claude subscriber a sidebar that reads and edits an open Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide deck directly, with no copying text into a chat window and back out again, per Anthropic's own announcement. The release lands five months after Anthropic quietly built the same kind of integration for Microsoft's office suite, a detail the announcement itself does not mention.
What
The add-on opens in a panel beside the file a user already has open and can see which text, cells, or slides are selected before making a change, according to Anthropic's resource page. In Docs, it can restyle a heading or fix a sentence in place, or propose bigger rewrites as suggestion cards that a user applies or dismisses one at a time. In Sheets, it writes formulas, builds pivot tables and native charts, adds tabs, and can pull a data range into Python for joins or cleanup before writing results back into the sheet. In Slides, it builds new slides that match the deck's existing layout and theme, then checks its own output for overlapping elements or text that runs off the slide.
Two modes govern how much Claude does unsupervised. The default, "Ask before edits," stops on every change for a user's approval. "Accept all edits" lets Claude work through a task without pausing. Separately, Anthropic is also shipping Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors, also in beta, that work the other direction: a user starts inside Claude's chat, pastes a file link or asks for a new document, and Claude creates or edits the Google file from there, pulling in context from other connected tools such as Salesforce along the way. A file Claude creates or edits through those connectors is still bound by the user's existing Google Drive sharing permissions, per Anthropic, so the connectors do not grant Claude access beyond what the signed-in user could already open manually. Installation runs through the Google Workspace Marketplace, and domain admins can push the add-on to specific groups from the Google Admin console rather than waiting for individual employees to install it themselves.
Claude now sits inside both major office suites, not just one
Anthropic already sells Claude for Microsoft 365, covering Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook (Outlook still in beta), with the same sidebar-and-tracked-changes pattern it just brought to Google's suite. That earlier launch went largely unremarked outside Anthropic's own marketing pages. Combined with this week's Workspace add-on, Claude is now a native sidebar inside both of the office suites most paid-seat businesses actually run on, not a chat tab a worker has to tab away to.
For a company picking an AI assistant, that collapses a decision that used to hinge on which suite a vendor supported into a narrower one: which assistant does the better job inside the suite already in use. Google has offered its own Gemini sidebar inside Workspace since May 2024, as The Verge noted in its coverage of Claude's launch, so Claude is not introducing the sidebar pattern to Google Docs, it is matching an incumbent on Google's own turf while also matching Microsoft Copilot on Microsoft's. On Claude's Enterprise plan, the add-on also inherits the account's existing Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys, and OpenTelemetry audit export, per Anthropic's announcement, which is the detail an IT buyer evaluating the rollout will check before a wider deployment rather than the editing features themselves.
Context
Microsoft's Copilot has shipped inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint since early 2023, adding a second incumbent's head start to Google's own Gemini sidebar. Anthropic's pitch is portability: the same connectors, skills, and model choices a team already uses in Claude's chat interface carry over into the sidebar, so a skill built once, such as a saved quarterly-business-review format, works the same way inside a Google Doc as it does in a standalone Claude conversation. Anthropic frames the underlying model and skills as the constant a team keeps even as it moves between a Google file, a Microsoft file, and a plain chat window, rather than asking a team to relearn a workflow in each surface. The real test for that pitch is whether portability beats years of default-app habit with Gemini or Copilot, and only usage after the beta period will show that.
What to watch next
Anthropic has not disclosed a timeline for moving the Google Workspace add-on out of beta or published seat-pricing specific to it; it rides on existing paid Claude plans for now. Because enabling the create-and-edit connectors on Team and Enterprise plans requires an owner or primary owner to turn them on first, the more useful signal in the next few months is whether IT admins deploy the add-on domain-wide or let it spread seat by seat, since that pace will say more about enterprise appetite for sidebar AI than the beta-to-GA timeline will.
