The short version

Google Vault can now filter and export users' Gemini in Workspace conversations for legal and compliance review, one of roughly a dozen Gemini updates Google shipped across Workspace in the week of October 20, 2026.

Google adds Gemini conversation exports to Vault for Workspace e-discovery

Legal and compliance teams can now pull a defensible record of what an employee asked Gemini and what it answered back, after Google added Gemini-in-Workspace conversations as a searchable, exportable data source inside Google Vault on October 22, 2026, per Google's announcement.

What shipped

The Vault update lets admins filter Gemini conversations by custodian, covering organizational units of up to 5,000 users, and by date range with time zone selection, then export matching results as JSON through the Vault UI or API, according to the same post. Exports capture the full exchange: user prompts, Gemini's responses, generated attachments such as images, and links to the Drive files, Gmail threads, and citations Gemini referenced while answering, across Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet. API access follows within 14 days of each domain's UI rollout, and the feature is live now on both Rapid and Scheduled Release domains for Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and several other paid editions carrying the Vault add-on.

The Vault export landed inside a broader run of Gemini updates Google bundled into its October 23 weekly recap: AI-generated meeting recaps in Google Chat, Gemini in Sheets reaching iOS after an earlier Android launch, natural-language BigQuery queries inside Connected Sheets, insight summaries for teachers using Gemini Notebook in Classroom, and a centralized hub for customizing how the Gemini app responds and connects to other tools. Separately, Google Meet's speech translation expanded from a fixed single language pair per meeting to any combination of 63 languages in the same call, powered by what Google calls Gemini 3.5 Live Translate, with the wider rollout starting October 22 on Rapid Release domains and November 2 on Scheduled Release domains, per the Meet translation post.

Compliance teams get an audit trail for AI chats

Until now, enterprises adopting Gemini across Workspace had no built-in way to produce AI-conversation records for litigation holds, regulatory audits, or internal investigations without exporting Admin console logs by hand. Routing that data through Vault gives legal and IT teams the same retrieval workflow they already use for email and Drive, rather than a separate process for AI usage. Google notes that retention rules and litigation holds for this specific data source are not yet included and will follow in later releases, per the announcement, so the export capability currently covers discovery and review, not automatic preservation.

What to watch next

Watch whether Microsoft adds an equivalent Gemini-style export inside Purview for Microsoft 365 Copilot conversations, since Google's move sets a compliance bar that enterprise buyers comparing the two platforms are likely to ask about directly. Also watch for Google's promised follow-up release adding retention rules and litigation holds on top of this export, which would close the preservation gap the current version leaves open.
