OpenAI and Work Louder Launch $230 Codex Micro Keypad with Agent-Status LEDs and Reasoning Dial
OpenAI opened orders on July 15 for the Codex Micro, a $230 mechanical keypad built with keyboard maker Work Louder and designed to sit beside a developer's keyboard while Codex agents run in the background. It is the first hardware product OpenAI has shipped under its own brand, per Engadget's coverage.
What
Six frosted Agent Keys with RGB LEDs display the live status of each running Codex agent. Per the Work Louder product page, the LEDs cycle through five states: idle, thinking, complete, needs input, and error. Additional Command Keys map to high-frequency actions including accepting or rejecting generated code, push-to-talk, starting a new chat, and triggering custom commands.
A rotary encoder controls how deeply Codex reasons through a task. Turning it down suits quick edits; turning it up commits more compute to a problem. A planar joystick puts four preset or custom skills at the fingertip. The unit connects via Bluetooth or USB-C and works on Mac and Windows.
The spec sheet lists 13 mechanical switches total, one touch sensor, one rotary encoder, and one joystick. The chassis is CNC-machined polycarbonate with an aluminum base. Thirty-two custom icon keycaps and eleven solid-color caps ship in the box, and any key can be remapped inside Codex without a separate download. Six programmable layers allow users to group different workflow sets into dedicated layouts.

Why it matters
Codex runs multi-agent coding tasks in the background while a developer works on other things. Checking agent status normally requires switching app contexts and opening the Codex window. The Agent Keys replace that with a glance at the desk. The five-state LED vocabulary is narrow enough to read without thought: a solid green means complete, a yellow pulse means still working.
The reasoning dial has an equally concrete payoff. Adjusting reasoning intensity in Codex requires navigating the app's settings panel. A physical dial makes it in-band: no context switch, no menu, one hand gesture between intensive analysis and a quick reply. For developers who leave multiple agents running throughout a session, the difference between hardware controls and software menus compounds across dozens of interactions per day.
Beyond the daily workflow question, this launch is OpenAI's first step into owned hardware. A second device, a Jony Ive-designed smart speaker, is expected later in 2026. That project sits at the center of a trade-secret lawsuit Apple filed against OpenAI employees Tang Yew Tan and Chang Liu, both former Apple staff. The Codex Micro has no connection to that dispute, and Engadget noted it is "the least troubled" of OpenAI's current hardware projects.
Context
Work Louder builds boutique mechanical keypads. Its Creator Micro 2 and the Framer Micro (a co-branded device made with website builder Framer) established its partnership model: Work Louder designs and manufactures the hardware while the partner handles software integration. The Codex Micro follows that structure. OpenAI and Work Louder teased the accessory on OpenAI's developer X account in June before the July 15 launch.
OpenAI recently merged its Codex coding app into a broader "super app" that combines ChatGPT, Codex, and a new general-productivity agent called ChatGPT Work. The Codex Micro targets the heavier-use end of that audience.
What to watch next
Early reviews will test whether the agent-status LEDs update with low enough latency to be useful during active sessions. Work Louder is shipping from limited stock, so a broader production run or waitlist announcement would signal how much real developer demand there is at $230. If the Apple lawsuit against OpenAI expands in scope, any injunction on OpenAI hardware distribution could affect the Codex Micro as well, though the current filings center on the smart speaker project, not this device.
