Starting this summer, qualifying research faculty and postdoctoral researchers can get GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, ChatGPT Work, and Codex at no charge through 2027, a package per OpenAI's announcement worth the equivalent of a $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro subscription.

What researchers get

Each approved participant receives GPT-5.6 Sol Pro (OpenAI's current flagship), access to ChatGPT Work, and Codex, the company's agentic coding environment, per TechTimes. The package includes four collaborator invites per workspace, higher usage limits, expanded deep research capability, larger context windows, and business-grade data privacy. Data shared through the program is not used to train OpenAI's models.

OpenAI called the program part of a commitment of more than $250 million through 2027. That total includes the $50 million NextGenAI consortium the company announced earlier this year, per OpenAI.

The first 10,000 seats go out this summer. Researchers at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study and France's Ecole normale superieure are already gaining access, with the broader rollout continuing to 100,000 participants through 2027.

What the program does not include: model weights, training access, or any mechanism for participants to modify or redistribute the underlying models. The access is product and API only.

Who qualifies

Eligibility is limited to faculty and postdoctoral researchers at recognized degree-granting institutions with high research activity. Applicants must verify their institutional affiliation through SheerID and submit a paper published within the past three years to arXiv, bioRxiv, or ChemRxiv in one of seven fields: Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Materials, Computer Science, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics, per TechTimes. Selection is based on publication record, not institutional affiliation alone.

Why it matters

Academic researchers have historically had access to frontier models only through expensive commercial plans or limited API credits. A $200-per-month pro subscription, free, at scale, removes a real barrier for individual researchers who lack lab budgets to pay for sustained frontier-model access. If even a fraction of the 100,000 seat recipients publish peer-reviewed work that cites GPT-5.6 Sol's performance on actual scientific tasks, that record will carry more credibility than vendor benchmarks alone.

The competitive dynamic is sharp. Anthropic launched Claude Science for all paid subscribers roughly five weeks before this announcement, per TechTimes. OpenAI's program requires credential verification and targets researchers specifically; Anthropic's approach is broader but does not offer free access. Neither Google nor Meta has announced a comparable dedicated academic grant program at this scale.

What to watch next

The most useful output from this program will be independent benchmark evaluations, not from OpenAI. Watch for preprints from the first cohort assessing GPT-5.6 Sol on domain-specific tasks in biology, mathematics, and materials science, which would supplement or challenge OpenAI's own affiliated benchmarks. On the competitive side, whether Anthropic or Google counters with a credentialed free-access program of similar scope will signal how seriously labs treat academic access as a long-term strategy rather than a one-cycle PR move.
