The short version

OpenAI extended ChatGPT into transactional territory on August 10, 2026, adding real-time table reservations and waitlist access through three major booking platforms serving restaurants in the US and Canada.

ChatGPT adds live restaurant booking through Yelp, OpenTable, and Resy

Table booking moved inside the conversation on August 10, 2026. Yelp, OpenTable, and Resy each connected their reservation systems to ChatGPT, so users can now confirm a seat at a restaurant without switching to a separate app.

What happened

Yelp announced the integration, bringing Yelp Reservations and Waitlist directly into ChatGPT. OpenAI confirmed the simultaneous rollout with OpenTable and Resy in a post on X: "Ask. Book. Eat. Repeat." The three-platform partnership covers thousands of restaurants across the US and Canada, per Android Authority.

The feature builds on an earlier Yelp data arrangement in which ChatGPT already surfaced Yelp reviews, ratings, and photos in recommendation responses. The reservation layer adds the action step. A user asks ChatGPT to find and book a table; ChatGPT completes the transaction inside the same session. Post-booking changes still route through Yelp's own platform directly.

Why it matters

Recommending and booking have remained two separate steps in AI-driven consumer apps. This integration fuses them inside a single ChatGPT session, covering discovery, comparison, and reservation in sequence.

For operators watching where AI fits into daily consumer workflows, the pattern is worth tracking. OpenAI is using restaurant reservations as a proof-of-concept for absorbing transactional tasks that previously required dedicated apps. The category suits the test: bookings are low-stakes and frequent, which means users can try the integrated flow without much downside if it does not work as expected.

Yelp, OpenTable, and Resy each process large reservation volumes through their own interfaces. Whether a meaningful share of those bookings migrates to ChatGPT depends on conversion rates the three platforms have not yet disclosed. The structural shift is real regardless. A general-purpose chat interface now controls the final step of the restaurant decision cycle, not just the research phase.

Restaurant and hospitality operators on any of the three platforms have no immediate action required. Discoverability and bookability inside ChatGPT arrive through existing platform relationships.

Context

OpenTable is a Booking Holdings subsidiary with broad US restaurant coverage. Resy, owned by American Express, holds a strong position at high-demand urban and fine-dining venues. Yelp supplies both the booking mechanism and the content layer (reviews, ratings, and photos) to the integration, giving it a wider footprint than either booking platform alone.

Yelp's content data already flowed into ChatGPT under an earlier partnership, making this a second-phase expansion rather than a new vendor relationship.

What to watch next

Whether restaurant booking volume through ChatGPT justifies rolling out the same model in adjacent verticals is the key question. OpenAI has not announced specific conversion targets or public timelines. Hotel bookings, event tickets, and healthcare appointments are the obvious candidate categories. Per Yelp's announcement, the integration is live now at participating US and Canada restaurants.
