ChatGPT delivers ads on 1 in 4 commercial queries as OpenAI ships product carousels and oCPC bidding

· by Pondero Newsdesk

The short version

OpenAI launched multi-product shopping carousels and conversion-optimized CPC campaigns for ChatGPT Ads on August 13, alongside an expansion to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. A third-party study found ads appear on 28.69% of ChatGPT healthcare queries.

A study of 50,006 commercial prompts by SE Ranking, published August 10, found ChatGPT served paid ads on 25.94% of all commercial queries. In healthcare specifically, the ad rate hit 28.69%, more than ten times Google AI Mode's 2.64% rate in that same category, per the SE Ranking analysis. Organic citations in health-related responses now routinely share space with sponsored placements. On August 13, OpenAI shipped the product features driving that expansion: multi-product shopping carousels, conversion-optimized CPC campaigns in beta, and automatic advanced matching as the default for new Web pixels, alongside a rollout to five new countries.

What happened

OpenAI published three capability additions in its August 13 announcement. Each carousel pulls several products from one retailer's feed into a single ad unit, positioned below the generated answer. Currently in testing for product feed campaigns, per Search Engine Land, carousels draw from the same data retailers already maintain for Google Shopping. Conversion-optimized CPC campaigns (oCPC) launched in beta, letting advertisers optimize toward downstream conversions while still paying per click. Automatic advanced matching (AAM) became the default for all new Web pixels, with existing pixels migrating automatically on August 17 unless advertisers opt out. New attribution integrations with Triple Whale, Sonar Optimize, and Hightouch also shipped.

UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea went live on August 11, per gHacks coverage of the OpenAI rollout. OpenAI said Latin America coverage would continue expanding through 2026. Ads appear only to users on the Free and Go tiers; Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise accounts see none.

A separate study from SE Ranking, published August 10 and based on 50,006 commercial prompts, found ChatGPT served ads on 28.69% of healthcare queries, compared with 2.64% for Google AI Mode in the same category. Across all commercial query categories, ChatGPT's overall ad rate was 25.94%, close to AI Mode's 29.45%. SE Ranking also found roughly one in seven ad placements had no topical connection to the query it appeared alongside.

Why it matters

ChatGPT Ads had no multi-product shopping units or conversion-based bidding before August 13. Advertisers who already run ROAS-based campaigns on Google Shopping can now apply the same optimization logic inside ChatGPT without rebuilding creative or restructuring product feeds. That removes a major objection to shifting test budgets to the new channel.

For operators tracking organic AI citation coverage, the healthcare query data is the more pressing signal. Paid carousels now compete directly with organic ChatGPT citations in health-related responses at a rate more than ten times higher than Google AI Mode's ad density in the same category. Per Axios reporting on OpenAI's internal projections, the company expects $2.5 billion in ad revenue for 2026 and $100 billion by 2030. Revenue pressure at that scale pushes ad density higher, not lower.

GEO operators in health or finance verticals should audit their current organic citation rates in ChatGPT responses now, before expanded advertiser supply scales further and compresses that organic share. SE Ranking's methodology (50,006 prompts across commercial categories) offers a replicable baseline template for tracking that shift over time.

Brands with established Google Shopping or Meta Advantage campaigns in the UK, Mexico, and Japan can now port existing product feeds to a new intent surface with minimal additional setup.

What to watch next

Published ROI data comparing ChatGPT Ads conversion rates against Google AI Mode benchmarks will be the first real test of whether oCPC campaigns can pull budget from incumbents. OpenAI is already testing multi-advertiser placements, which would end the current single-ad-per-conversation format and introduce auction competition. Data protection regulators in the UK and Brazil are the near-term watchpoints for health and finance category ad density, given both markets have active enforcement frameworks covering sensitive data in advertising.
