Microsoft published its September 2026 Power Platform feature update on September 18, moving the Canvas Authoring Agent Plugin to general availability and separately launching the Power Apps MCP server in public preview, opening canvas app data operations to external agent integrations.

The Canvas Authoring Agent Plugin reached GA in the September 2026 release. Per Microsoft's release notes, the plugin enables shared authoring sessions where makers and AI agents collaborate on canvas apps. Agents can create and modify screens, connect data sources, update Power Fx formulas, configure controls, and validate changes in a live editing session. Developers retain control over delegation scope: the plugin operates on a handoff model where a maker assigns complex or repetitive tasks to an agent and resumes direct editing when precision is needed, per Magnetism Solutions' coverage of the September 4, 2026 GA announcement.

The same update brought the Model App-Builder Skill to GA as well. It lets GitHub Copilot CLI and Claude Code build and edit model-driven apps from natural-language requirements using AI code generation tooling, per Microsoft.

Alongside both GA releases, Microsoft opened the Power Apps MCP server in public preview. The server lets external agents automate data entry in canvas apps by extracting fields from unstructured sources such as shared mailboxes and SharePoint folders, then creating corresponding records. An enhanced agent feed gives makers side-by-side comparison views for pending agentic actions, with direct record navigation to review or reject changes before they commit, per Microsoft's MCP preview announcement. The preview is rolling out to US early-release-cycle environments first, with regional expansion following Microsoft's standard weekly deployment schedule.

Why it matters

GA status for the canvas authoring plugin removes the central blocker for enterprise adoption: organizations can now deploy agentic coauthoring in production under standard Microsoft support terms rather than the no-SLA conditions of preview. The human-approval feed built into the MCP server addresses the governance concern that kept enterprise customers watching from the sidelines during preview, giving a maker explicit sign-off authority over every agentic data change before it takes effect.

For teams already running GitHub Copilot CLI or Claude Code, the Model App-Builder Skill brings model-driven app editing into the same agent sessions used for code tasks. That removes a meaningful context-switch cost for developers who manage both code and no-code layers of enterprise tooling.

The MCP server positions Power Apps inside the wider agent ecosystem forming around the Model Context Protocol. Any agent that implements the protocol can begin calling canvas app data operations without a custom connector, which reduces integration overhead for organizations running compatible agent frameworks. Initial scope covers data entry, with Microsoft indicating plans to add further create-read-update-delete operations progressively.
