Microsoft 365 Copilot adds governed Agent Store publishing and Anthropic model support in August release wave

Custom agents built inside Microsoft 365 Copilot now require IT admin approval before reaching end users, closing the governance gap that stalled enterprise extensibility deployments. Microsoft's August 11, 2026 release also added Anthropic model support in Word, giving organizations already running Claude the option to use it inside document editing alongside existing OpenAI models.

What

The August 11 wave, per Microsoft's official release notes, added Anthropic AI models as an option in Word's Copilot editing pane. Users can now choose between Anthropic and OpenAI models when working in Word, with Microsoft framing the change as giving users a model that "best fits their editing needs." Previously only OpenAI models were available for in-document editing.

SharePoint Authoritative Sites shipped in the same wave. Admins can now mark specific SharePoint sites as authoritative, which causes Copilot Search to rank content from those sites above unofficial or informal sources. The feature targets a common enterprise complaint: Copilot surfacing stale or unvetted documents instead of current company policy or approved announcements.

Outlook picked up two features: a coaching pane that delivers email draft feedback directly in the Copilot chat sidebar, and meeting preparation assistance for classic Outlook for Windows. The meeting prep capability was already available in new Outlook, Mac, and web clients; the August 11 update extends it to the legacy Windows client and requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.

A separate July 15 release added the governed Agent Store publishing flow. Teams build a custom agent in Agent Builder, submit it for admin review via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, and the admin can then publish the approved agent to the "Built by your org" section of the Agent Store. Microsoft's admin center documentation shows the review queue surfaces each agent's data sources, custom actions, and tool access for inspection. Admins can also scope an approved agent's visibility to specific users or groups rather than deploying it organization-wide.

Also in August 11: ServiceNow Knowledge and Catalog connectors tightened permissions to enforce user roles such as admin, knowledge manager, and knowledge admin, replacing the earlier user-criteria-only model.

Why it matters

M365 Copilot now runs Anthropic models alongside OpenAI models in Word's editing pane. Enterprise teams that already standardize on Claude for other workflows can now keep model consistency inside document editing without switching applications.

Until this release, a custom agent built by any team could reach end users without IT review. The admin center queue now requires approval (surfacing each agent's data sources, custom actions, and tool access) before any agent appears in the "Built by your org" section. Enterprises evaluating GitHub Copilot for Business or Enterprise alongside M365 Copilot will find the agent review model mirrors the permission and access scoping controls they already apply to their code-assistant deployments.

SharePoint Authoritative Sites pairs with the agent governance story by controlling the ground-truth content layer. An approved agent is only as reliable as the organizational data it surfaces; authoritative site classification gives admins a tool to ensure priority content comes from vetted sources.

What to watch next

Microsoft's roadmap does not specify when the governed Agent Store publishing flow will extend to multi-tenant scenarios, where an IT admin at a parent company could manage agents across subsidiary tenants from one Admin Center view. Companies running multiple tenants under one IT umbrella should monitor the Microsoft 365 roadmap for cross-tenant agent management announcements. The Planner Agent expansion to group-based basic plans, also in the August 11 wave, will be worth tracking as an indicator of how quickly Microsoft brings governance parity across the M365 Copilot feature set.
