OpenAI ships ChatGPT Space and Pages, pushing into Microsoft's core office business
OpenAI opened a shared team workspace inside ChatGPT on September 29 that holds a team's documents, slides, and AI agents in one place, the same functional footprint as Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, at a moment OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people a week.
What
At DevDay 2026 in San Francisco, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace where colleagues, ChatGPT itself, and a user's "dot" (OpenAI's newly launched AI agent persona) work from the same pool of documents and context, per OpenAI's DevDay recap. It shipped alongside Pages, a new collaborative document type OpenAI describes as "built for human and agent collaboration," where a user can write, research, generate charts, or create images inside a single doc that teammates then edit together, according to the same recap. Collaborative slides are coming "in the coming weeks": multiple teammates and agents will be able to edit a deck at once, leave comments, and export the result to PowerPoint or Google Slides with formatting intact, OpenAI said. Space, Pages, and the ability to create teams and delegate recurring "team tasks" on a schedule are live now for Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans on desktop and web; finding, reading, and sharing pages also works on mobile, with mobile creation and editing still to come, per OpenAI. CEO Sam Altman described the workspace during the DevDay presentation: "Your pages and files all live together in Space, like they would in a drive. But spaces feel alive," TechCrunch reported.
The launch also folded in tools aimed at where teams already talk. Mentioning "@ChatGPT" inside a Slack or Microsoft Teams channel now lets a teammate get help in that thread without needing an individual ChatGPT license, and a Meetings plugin, in beta on the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, takes notes during calls and saves action items directly into a Space, per the DevDay recap. Team tasks let a workspace admin schedule recurring agent work, such as a weekly project update pulled from connected tools, a job neither Word nor PowerPoint has ever done natively.
Access splits by plan tier in a way that matters for who can actually roll this out. Space and Pages are open to individual Pro users as well as Business and Enterprise workspaces, but creating a team, assigning team tasks, and turning on the Slack or Teams mention only work on Business and Enterprise plans, per OpenAI's recap. That puts the full collaboration package, the part that competes hardest with a Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace license, behind the same admin-managed tier IT departments already use to control OpenAI's other workspace settings.
Space and Pages let teams skip Word and Google Docs entirely
TechCrunch framed the launch as OpenAI moving directly into Microsoft's core workplace-software revenue, even though Microsoft remains one of OpenAI's closest infrastructure partners through Azure. Pages functions as OpenAI's answer to Google Docs and Microsoft Word; collaborative slides is its answer to PowerPoint. That distinction matters for anyone budgeting software spend: a team that previously used ChatGPT for drafting and then moved the result into Word or Google Docs for the shared, tracked-changes version now has a reason to keep the whole workflow inside ChatGPT, dot included. OpenAI said Space and team creation reach "our collective 1.2B weekly users," a self-reported figure per the DevDay recap, which means the office-suite features launch with a distribution base larger than Microsoft 365's total paid-seat count, though OpenAI has not disclosed how many of those weekly users will get Space access or convert to a paid team plan.
Context and reactions
Space and Pages were two of more than 20 announcements OpenAI made at DevDay 2026, alongside a faster model called GPT-6.1 Sol, a premium-speed tier called Ultrafast, and the Dots agent personas that Space is built around, per OpenAI. TechCrunch noted that the move comes as Microsoft and Salesforce push in the opposite direction, both shipping their own slate of AI products over the past year to keep pace with OpenAI. The relationship between OpenAI and Microsoft has stayed unusual for two companies now competing for the same office-software budget: Microsoft holds a multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI and runs OpenAI's models through Azure, even as ChatGPT increasingly duplicates the functions of Word, PowerPoint, and Teams chat.
What to watch next
Collaborative slides has no fixed ship date beyond "the coming weeks," and OpenAI has not published usage or conversion numbers for Space or Pages since launch. Whether Microsoft answers with a tighter Copilot-in-Office integration, rather than treating ChatGPT as a separate app competing at arm's length, is the next signal worth watching, along with any similar move from Google around Gemini and Workspace.
